Sweet Potato Chat
Sweet potato chaat (or Shakarkandi Chaat) is one of the simplest and most comforting street foods in northern India. It’s just roasted sweet potatoes tossed with lemon juice, black salt, garam masala, and chaat masala, but somehow tastes like so much more.
The caramelised sweetness of the potato meets the tangy, spiced kick of the masalas in the best way possible.
When I lived in Delhi, this was one of my go-to snacks from street vendors across the city. Unlike many other chaats, this one is already oil-free and owing to the sweet potato very filling. I like using purple sweet potatoes for their colour and extra sweetness, but any variety works.
It’s one of those recipes that reminds you just how satisfying simple food can be.
Ingredients
2 medium sweet potatoes
1 tbsp black salt (adjust to taste)
1 tsp garam masala
½ tsp chaat masala
1 lemon
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
Pierce the sweet potatoes a few times with a fork or knife.
Roast until soft inside, about 40–50 minutes depending on size. Check doneness by inserting a knife.
Once roasted, peel and chop into roughly 1-inch chunks.
Transfer to a mixing bowl and add lemon juice, black salt, garam masala, and chaat masala.
Toss well until everything is evenly coated.
